March 30, 2005
Queens, NY - Four St. John's pitchers combined to allow no hits, including three relievers who did not allow a hit in the final four innings, and the Red Storm scored two runs apiece in four-straight innings en route to an 8-0 win over Wagner at The Ballpark on Wednesday afternoon.
The win, the third in the last four games for St. John's, improves the team's record to 11-9 overall, while Wagner falls to 7-10 overall.
Sophomore Anthony Smith (Katonah, NY) started and went five innings, allowing only two hits with two walks and four strikeouts as he improved to 1-1 this season.
Anthony Sullivan (Arlington, MA) threw two innings of scoreless relief, walking one and striking out three, redshirt freshman James Lally (Floral Park, NY) threw one-third of an inning and freshman Nick Luisi (Bayport, NY) threw a scoreless ninth inning.
The Red Storm were held in check by Wagner starter Mike Bujalkowski over the first three innings, but got on board in the fourth. St. John's put the first two runners on base as a senior P.J. Antoniato (Levittown, NY) singled and junior Greg Thomson (Levittown, NY) reached on a bunt single. After a walk to load the bases, a pair of sacrifice flies - the first from senior Blake Hershelman (Georgetown, DE) and the second from redshirt sophomore Chris Joachim (Massapequa Park, NY) - gave St. John's a 2-0 lead.
In the fifth, junior Ken Devenney (Philadelphia, PA) hit a leadoff double and moved to third when sophomore Sam DeLuca (Pelham, NY) reached on a bunt single. Sacrifice flies from senior Jim Martin (Norwood, MA) and Antoniato scored both runners and gave St. John's a 4-0 lead.
Bujalkowski hit Hershelman and Joachim with one out in the sixth and Devenney hit a two-run single off of reliever John Kelly, increasing the margin to 6-0.
The Red Storm closed out the scoring in the seventh when freshman Gil Zayas (East New York, NJ) reached second on an error and moved to third on Antoniato's single. Thomson followed with a triple to the wall in right-center, scoring both runners and giving St. John's an 8-0 lead.
Antoniato had three hits to pace the Red Storm offense, scoring twice and driving in a run, and Thomson had two hits, scored a run and drove in two. Devenney finished with a double, single, one run and two RBI.
St. John's returns to play on Saturday, hosting Pittsburgh in a BIG EAST doubleheader at The Ballpark. Live audio and statistics will be available for all three games of the weekend series on the St. John's website.
