JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. - The Carson-Newman pitching staff allowed just one run in 14 innings of work as the Eagles swept visiting Brevard 12-1 and 8-0 on Saturday afternoon at the Silver Diamond Baseball Complex.

Eagle starters Brett Hontz and Corbin Arial combined on 17 strikeouts over a combined 13 innings to shut down Brevard.

The Eagles took game one 12-1, pounding out 16 hits, including 12 singles.

Hontz (WP, 7-1) worked eight innings for the win. He struck out nine and allowed only three hits, as the senior took a two-hit shutout into the eighth.

Carson-Newman (28-12) jumped on Brevard starter Spencer Linn (LP, 1-3) early, with a seven-run first inning.

The Eagles had four first-inning hits, highlighted by senior Nick Achberger's (Anderson, S.C.) RBI-double to left center and Jonathan McMahon (Charlotte, N.C.) bases-loaded triple, as the Eagles batted around. Sophomore Derek Long (Jefferson City, Tenn.) and freshman Wesley Dozier (Cornelius, N.C.) each added RBI-singles in the inning as well.

Linn also walked two in the first, helping the Eagles' cause.

McMahon led the Eagles, finishing 3-for-3 with a triple and three RBIs. Senior Langdon Potts had a 2-for-3 day with a pair of singles and two RBIs. He also walked three times and scored a run.

Carson-Newman took game two 8-0, as the Eagles broke open a scoreless game two with a run in the bottom of the fourth inning to take a 1-0 lead.

McMahon's RBI-single to left field score junior Tyler Wynn, who reach on a one-out double down the first-base line, to give the Eagles the lead. McMahon's fourth hit of the day nearly clipped Wynn, who was moving on the hit-and-run.

The Eagles exploded for seven runs in the fifth to put the game out of reach.

C-N took advantage of four Tornado errors in the inning to build its lead to 8-0. Cory McGinnis (Morristown, Tenn.), Jason Gray (Rutledge, Tenn.), Potts, and Dozier all added RBI singles in the inning.

Arial (WP, 2-3) worked five shutout innings, pitching out of a bases loaded jam in the fourth. The Eglin, South Carolina-native surrendered five hits, striking out eight.

Rain forced the game, originally scheduled for seven innings, to be called after five.

The two teams will play a single game Sunday to wrap up the series. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m in Jefferson City.
