CHARLESTON, S.C. - A sacrifice fly by Sid Fallow with one out in the bottom of the 12th inning spoiled the USC Upstate baseball team's bid for an upset against 2007 Southern Conference Tournament finalist The Citadel on Wednesday afternoon in the second game of a doubleheader, as The Citadel won, 4-3. In the first game, The Citadel posted a 10-1 win in a game that was completed after being suspended in the third inning on Tuesday.

Upstate (4-6 overall) took a 3-2 lead into the bottom of the ninth inning, but The Citadel (5-4 overall) came back to score a run, grouping three hits together and Matt Reifsnider providing an RBI hit. The Spartans put a runner on third in the bottom of the 11th with one out, after freshman Blake Green (Rock Hill, S.C./Northwestern) reached on an infield single. He took second on a sacrifice bunt and stole third, but two strikeouts ended the threat.

The Bulldogs broke through in the 12th, as Chris Swauger singled up the middle with one out, and Sonny Meade added another single through the right side, sending Swauger to third, setting up Fallow's sac fly.

The Spartans jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning, as senior Casey Rivers (Hudson, Mass./Hudson) walked with one out, took third on a single to center field from senior Andrew Runion (Simpsonville, S.C./Mauldin) and scored on a sacrifice fly by junior Phillip Morgan (Campobello, S.C./Spartanburg Methodist College). They added another tally in the sixth inning, as Runion reached on a walk, Morgan singled to right field and an error on freshman A.J. Clark's (Colorado Springs, Colo./Colorado Springs Christian) bunt loaded the bases. An error by the catcher helped bring Runion in.

Single tallies in the seventh and eighth innings by The Citadel tied the game, with a home run to left-center making it 2-2. The Spartans took the lead in the top of the ninth, with freshman Keith Bisgounis (Oviedo, Fla./Oviedo) singling to shortstop with one out and junior Kyle Simpson (Lyman, S.C./Byrnes) adding a bunt single. A double steal moved each runner up a bag before a strikeout looked as if it would leave the runners stranded. However, a wild pitch helped score Bisgounis.

Green and Bisgounis led the Spartans with two hits each. Bisgounis added a run. Meade finished 3-for-6 with a run and an RBI to lead the Bulldogs. Bryan Altman added two runs and two hits and Chris McGuiness, Reifsnider and Kyle Jordan also each added two hits.

Freshman Robert Stegbauer (Hillsboro, Ohio/Lynchburg-Clay) pitched well for the Spartans in his second collegiate start, tossing 6 2/3 innings, allowing five hits, three walks and no earned runs. He struck out three.

Junior Justin Hayes (Mauldin, S.C./Mauldin) (0-1) took the loss in relief, allowing three runs in 4 2/3 innings. He struck out three. Matt Reifsnider (3-0) pitched four innings to earn the win in relief for the Bulldogs, allowing three hits, one run and striking out four.

In the first game, the Spartans offense struggled to gain momentum against Timmy Martin (1-0), who tossed 4 2/3 innings, allowing two hits and striking out two. Martin, who came in to start Wednesday's play after Matt Talley pitched 2 1/3 innings on Tuesday, was able to keep the Spartans on the ground, forcing six groundouts.

Meanwhile, The Citadel offensive attack started to move with home runs from Sonny Meade and Matt Simonelli helping it to a 6-0 lead after seven innings.

Upstate got its lone run after Simpson singled with one out in the eighth and Rivers with a single. After a flyout advanced Simpson to third, Morgan singled in Simpson.

In the bottom of the frame, a three-run homer from Chris Swauger provided the final runs in a four-run inning for the 10-1 margin.

Simpson and Morgan each posted two hits for Upstate. Meade led the Bulldogs with three hits, adding a run and two RBIs and Matt Arnold added two hits, a run and an RBI.

Sophomore Tyler Oliver (Lawrenceville, Ga./Collins Hill) (0-1) took the loss, allowing two earned runs and six hits in 1 2/3 innings, as he started on the hill after play was resumed on Wednesday. Junior Phillip Myers (Louisville, Ky./Seminole C.C.) pitched two scoreless innings on Tuesday and sophomore Brian Dempsey (Montverde, Fla./East Ridge) pitched 3 1/3 innings, allowing two hits and no earned runs to provide bright spots on the hill. Myers walked two and struck out one and Dempsey walked eight and struck out four.

Upstate will get back on the field on Saturday when it faces Mercer for an Atlantic Sun Conference doubleheader on Saturday at 12 p.m.
