March 2, 2004
WALNUT CREEK, Calif.- Arizona junior Koley Kolberg has been named the Pac-10 Pitcher of the Week for the week of Feb.24-March 2, commissioner Tom Hansen announced today.
Kolberg, from Coppell, Texas, helped Arizona to a series opening victory over No. 15-ranked Baylor in Waco, Texas, last Friday. The right-hander scattered three hits over seven innings with a season-high eight strikeouts. He gave up just one unearned run en route to his first win of the season. The Wildcats went on to win the road series two games to one.
Earlier in the week, Kolberg made his first career relief appearance in UA' s 4-0 loss at Arizona State. Entering the game with the bases loaded and one out on Tuesday, he struck out ASU's No. 3 and 4 hitters to keep the Sun Devils from extending their lead.
The pitcher of the week honor is the first in Kolberg's career and the 28th all-time Wildcat pitcher so honored.
ASU's Travis Buck was named the conference player of the week after going 10-for-12 (.833) with six runs scored, five doubles, one home run and 13 RBI in a three-game sweep over UConn.
UA's Kolberg (1-1, 2.79 ERA) is the scheduled starter in Arizona's three-game series opener against Sacramento State this Friday on Kindall Field at Sancet Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 7 pm MST.
