Sept. 2, 2005
ASHEVILLE, N.C. - UNC Asheville Athletics Director Janet Cone today has announced that the athletics department will take several steps in response to the gas shortage crisis in the state caused by Hurricane Katrina.
"Our Athletic Department is going to do everything we can to follow Govenor Easley's directive on travel restrictions," stated Cone. "We have an active schedule with our fall teams getting their seasons started. However, we will try and reschedule those games and matches when we can. We would ask our friends and fans to check our website to see if we have changed our schedule in any way."
Cone added that there would be a temporary stop to recruiting and travel for staff and coaches.
"I have informed our staff and coaches to cease any recruiting travel and other athletic business travel until further notice," added Cone.
Three Bulldog teams were scheduled to play this weekend but has had their events postponed.
The UNC Asheville men's and women's cross country squads were scheduled to open the 2005 season at South Carolina Friday night. The Bulldogs have pulled out of that meet and will not travel to Columbia. In addition, the UNC Asheville men's soccer match at Wofford has been postponed and moved to Sept. 28 in Spartanburg, S.C.
