Los Angeles, CA (Aug. 31) - Loyola Marymount University held a campus-wide memorial service at LMU's Sacred Heart Chapel on Wednesday, Aug. 31, for student-athletes Jessica Hanson and Adam Bacon. University President Rev. Robert B. Lawton, S. J. presided over the service, which was attended by the more than 350 student-athletes at LMU and by hundreds of others in celebration of the lives of Hanson and Bacon.
The families of the two student-athletes were also in attendance at the service. While the service for Hanson and Bacon, who were killed in a car accident on Friday, August 5, while in route to a Lake Havasu vacation with the Hanson family, was filled with heavy hearts, there was no shortage of celebration for their lives.
Bacon's head coach on the cross country team, Scott Guerrero, and Hanson's head coach on the women's soccer team, Gregg Murphy, stressed how both represented everything good about LMU and life, telling those in attendance to draw on the lives of both Bacon and Hanson to achieve the most in life.
Also speaking was Bacon's teammate Andy Thompson and Hanson's teammate Alicia Lloyd. The impact that both had on their respective teams was evident as Thompson ended the eulogies in leading everyone in attendance in a team huddle chant of "Pride", the same one used by Bacon and his teammates waiting for the start of the race.
With the motivating end to the memorial, the student-athletes and families of Hanson and Bacon went to the Welcome Back BBQ held by the Athletics Department. The annual event is the traditional beginning to a new athletic and academic season. The BBQ continued to celebrate the lives of Bacon and Hanson as both families received standing ovations from the student-athletes and coaching staffs as they entered Gersten Pavilion.
Both cross country, women's soccer and the entire athletics department will continue to celebrate the lives of Bacon and Hanson as the fall sports season gets into full swing this week. All six programs - women's cross country, men's cross country, women's soccer, men's soccer, women's volleyball and men's water polo - all play this week.
