Tallahassee, FL (U-WIRE) -- Three ACC teams advance to quarterfinal round of NCAA lacrosse tournament

Duke, Maryland and Virginia all advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCAA men's lacrosse championship with their respective wins on May 14.

No. 2 Duke defeated Fairfield 23-4 in the first round of the tournament. The second-seeded Blue Devils will play the winner of the Cornell vs. Towson contest in Princeton, N.J., May 21.

Duke's Matt Danowski, Dan Flannery and Zack Greer combined to score 12 goals and had nine assists for the Blue Devils.

Maryland advanced to the quarterfinals of the tournament with its win over Penn State 14-10. Maryland ------ the No. 3 seed for the tournament ------ opened the game with four goals from Andrew Schwartzman, Bill McGlone, Mike Hartofilis and Ian Healy, respectively. Penn State answered in the second quarter with five goals to

lead the Terps 6-5. They

couldn't hold on, however, as Joe Walters and Xander Ritz scored four points each in the second half to win the game for Maryland 14-10.

No. 4 seeded Virginia defeated Albany 23-9 to advance in the tournament. Scoring 11 goals in the first half, the Cavaliers went up 15-3 going into halftime. Virginia will play Navy ------ who defeated Delaware 9-7 ------ May 21 in the quarterfinal round at Johns Hopkins University.

ACC announces 2005 softball All-Conference players

On May 11, the Atlantic Coast Conference coaches voted to bestow All-Conference honors on 20 outstanding student-athletes.

Georgia Tech placed five team members on the list, including Jessica Sallinger, who took the inaugural ACC Softball Pitcher of the Year award. She leads the ACC with 24 wins, 13 shutouts and 324 strikeouts.

Sallinger's teammate Aileen Morales shared Freshman of the Year honors with Florida State's Tiffany McDonald. Morales leads the ACC in stolen bases with 44 and was second in the conference for runs scored with 39.
 

 

McDonald had a 14-8 record for the Seminoles and led the team with a 1.60 ERA. She threw the most innings in FSU history for a freshman with 152.2.

Virginia's Sara Larquier was named ACC Softball Player of the Year, leading the conference in total bases, doubles, triples and RBIs. She is the third Cavalier to be chosen as Player of the Year.

The ACC Softball Coach of the Year was Georgia Tech head coach Ehren Earleywine. The Yellow Jackets finished 46-12, 11-4 in the ACC and are seeded in the top spot heading into the ACC tournament.

Freshman shatters 24 year-old 400-meter record

At the Georgia Tech Invitational track meet in Atlanta May 14, Florida State freshman Ricardo Chambers broke the school record for the 400-meter dash, running the fastest time in the nation. His 44.87 time broke the FSU record 44.99 set by Olympic gold medalist Walter McCoy in 1981.

Fellow freshman teammate Walter Dix ran a 10.12 in the 100-meter during prelims, moving him into a tie for the No. 3 fastest time in the nation.

Kenny O'Neal, another freshman, finished fourth in his heat of the 100-meter running a 10.56. Rhoan Sterling took third in his heat with a 10.68.

All-American Garret Johnson threw a 59.15 meters in the discus to take the win, moving him to No. 6 in the nation. Teammate Andrew Diakos threw a 59.76 meters in the hammer throw.

On the women's side, the 4x100 relay took third place with its season-best time of 44.96. Kimberly Walker advanced to the finals of the 100-meter with a time of 11.75. She finished sixth in the finals, running an 11.76.

Evelyne Cynthia Niako ran a 54.58 in the 400-meter with teammate Dana Massiah half a second behind her at 55.01.

LaKendra McColumn took eighth in the 400-meter hurdles with her time of 58.93.

The Seminoles head to Randalls Island in New York May 27-28 for the NCAA East Regional Championships.
