New Brunswick, NJ (CSTV U-WIRE) -- The rosters of both the Rutgers men and women's track and field teams are filled with school record holders, and as the Scarlet Knights begin to take on their midseason form, no record in the history book is safe from some of the highly talented and experienced Knights.
Senior Shameka Marshall supported this case as she put together a pair of performances good enough not only for two wins at the non-scoring Penn State Invitational on Saturday, but also worthy of challenging history.
In the 55-meter hurdles, Marshall set a new school record with a 7.68 second NCAA provisional score, supplanting Tishona Watson (7.87), the record holder since 1993.
Marshall didn't stop there: She finished the 55m dash in 6.96 seconds, good enough to match Andrea Conway's 1988 record.
The accomplishment is nothing new for the All-American, holder of three other indoor records as well as three more outdoor.
"Even as she continues to get better, she continues to impress me. That's a spectacular double, she's really mastered that event," head coach Roberta Anthes said. "It's very exciting and it shows the other athletes what can be done. They've seen where Shameka and Dominique Sanon have come from. They recognize that people who were good solid high school athletes can go into another level."
While Marshall proved a worthy headliner, other Knights looked to share the spotlight at PSU.
Sanon, a senior and the record holder in the 500m, gained a victory in the 800m run in 2:13.66.
Freshman Alison Caruana continued her stellar start on the Banks with an easy victory in the 3,000-meter run (10:15.89), rounding out the quartet of victories for RU. Senior Maria Pavkovitch took second in the event with a time of 10:42.34.
"We're getting there but we're not there," Anthes said. "We still have a lot of room for improvement."
On Friday, head coach Mike Mulqueen's men's squad started to move closer to their championship form, taking first place out of 15 teams at the University of Albany's Great Dane Classic.
The defending IC4A champions were clearly the class of the meet.
The Knights posted a total score of 134, well ahead of second place Albany (109), with local rivals Monmouth (90.50) and Rider (50) placing third and sixth, respectively.
"We put some of our main guys in our main events. We started seeing what kind of team we can be," assistant coach Kevin Kelly said. "I just think we need more meets under our belt. In a few weeks when the Big East comes around, I think our marks will improve."
All-American senior Marquis Allen put in the performance of the day for the Knights, garnering another victory in the long jump with a staggering leap of 25'0". The mark was just slightly under Allen's own school record of 25'1 3/4".
Senior Ryan Westman worked his way back into the 500-meter run and came away with a victory after posting a time of 1:03.26. The record holder in that category himself, he's still over a second and a half away from challenging his own score.
Freshman Brian Duggan rounded out the wins for RU, as his 15'9" pole vault was enough to secure the victory. Junior Joe Porter recorded two of the team's 12 top-three finishes, placing second in the 200-meter dash (21.55) and third in the 55-meter dash (6.43).
Senior All-American Sam Segond took a rare second place in both the shot put and weight, falling short in his matchup against Northeastern's Derek Anderson.
