Five Former Vols to Compete in World Track and Field Championships

Aug. 4, 2005

Five former Volunteers represent three nations in the upcoming 10th IAAF World Championships in Athletics. The most elite track and field championships of the season will be held Saturday, Aug. 6 through Sunday, Aug. 14 at Olympic Stadium in Helsinki, Finland. Organizers expect as many as 209 nations to enter the track and field world championships.

Justin Gatlin, Leonard Scott and Anthony Famiglietti (pronounced Fam-uh-LET-tee) represent the U.S. team after qualifying at the USA outdoor championships in Carson, Calif., June 23-26. Gary Kikaya races for the Democratic Republic of Congo. Karl Jennings will hurdle for Canada.

Gatlin takes on the busiest schedule of any former Vol after qualifying in the 100 meters and 200. As long as he feels healthy, Gatlin is also a prime candidate to take on a leg in the 4x100 relay for Team USA. Gatlin ranks second in the world in the 100 with his season-best time of 9.89 seconds, clocked at a meet in London on July 22. Jamaica's Asafa Powell, who broke the world record earlier this summer with a 9.77, holds the world lead but has pulled out of the world championships with an injury. Gatlin stands fourth in the world, but third on the U.S. list, in the 200 with a time of 20.00. No stranger to elite world competition, Gatlin won the 2004 Olympic gold in the 100 and also took top honors in the 60 in the 2003 world indoor championships.

Scott joins Gatlin in the 100. Scott ranks third in the world this year in the 100 with a 9.94 time also posted in London. Scott, capping the most successful season of his track and field career, would also make a fine 4x100 relay candidate and is a member of the U.S. pool. In Gatlin and Scott, two of the world's fastest three 100 sprinters hail from Tennessee and ran on the same relay in college.

Providing further testament to the star power assembled on Tennessee's campus for the national championship season of 2002, Kikaya and Jennings joined Gatlin and Scott on the NCAA indoor championship team. Training under Tennessee assistant coach George Watts, Famiglietti finished up his collegiate career in 2000, just missing the 2001 NCAA outdoor championship season, in which Gatlin and Scott also played large roles.

Kikaya competes in the 400 for the Democratic Republic of Congo, his homeland. Kikaya ranks 10th on the 2005 world list in the 400 after circling the track in 44.81 in Oslo on July 29. While at Tennessee, Kikaya smashed Darwin Bond's 28-year-old school record in the 400 with a masterful 44.53 in 2002 and anchored the two fastest 4x400 relays in school history. Kikaya earned a bronze medal in the 400 at the 2004 world indoor championships.

Famiglietti represents the former Vols and Team USA in the steeplechase. Famiglietti's season-best time of 8:20.04, from a meet in Columbus, Ohio, May 6, ranks 36th in the world this year. Famiglietti ranks third all-time on Tennessee's steeplechase list.

Jennings contests the 110 hurdles for the Canadian team. Jennings went to high school in New Jersey but has earlier ties to Canada. His season-best time of 13.52, run May 7 in Modesto, Calif., ranks 38th on the world list this year. Jennings holds the fifth-fastest time on the Tennessee all-time 110 hurdles list behind only Willie Gault, Jabari Greer, Aries Merritt and Gatlin.

Tennessee will provide a summary of all race results featuring former Vols at the conclusion of the world championships. Those wishing to follow results daily can do so via the Internet at www.iaaf.org/WCH05/results/raceDate=08-06-2005/byDate.html.
