June 24, 2005

University of Texas-Pan American senior Isaac Ybarra (Mission, TX/Sharyland H.S.) finished ninth overall in the hammer throw at the 2005 United States Outdoor Track and Field Championships presented by Visa in Carson, CA, on Friday (June 24).

Ybarra finished the competition with a throw of 215-10, which earned him ninth place out of 26 total competitors. James Parker of the U.S. Air Force won the competition with a throw of 243-03.

The Rio Grande Valley native was the top-ranked track and field performer for the Broncs during the 2005 season where he was listed as high as 11th in the nation in the hammer throw. The program record-holder in that event, Ybarra finished second overall at the 2005 NCAA Division I Midwest Regional Championships in Norman, OK, which allowed him to become the first UTPA male student-athlete to ever qualify for the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field National Championships twice.

Ybarra finished 18th overall at the national championships with a top throw of 197-11 in his third and final attempt. Despite not reaching the All-American round at nationals, Ybarra left the UTPA men's track and field program after accumulating a number of laurels during his four-year tenure, including capturing 19 individual titles. He was named the Co-Male Student-Athlete of the Year winner in 2005 after he became the first track and field performer to earn Indoor All-American honors in the weight throw.
