WEST POINT, N.Y. - Nearly a month after graduating from the United States Military Academy, Army track and field star Caleb Wells continues to pile up the postseason accolades. Just three weeks since being named to the 2005-06 CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine University Division men's cross country and track and field Academic All-District I First Team, the four-year discus and shot put athlete became the third Army athlete this year to earn Academic All-America honors, being selected to the University Division's Third Team.
Student-athletes selected to the Academic All-America team must have at least a 3.2 grade-point average and be a significant contributor to their respective squad.
Wells graduated from the Academy with a cumulative grade-point average of 3.65. Earlier this year, he was named the 2006 Patriot League Indoor Track and Field "Scholar Athlete of the Year."
Wells, who won a pair of Patriot League championships during his senior season, set personal-best marks in both the discus and shot put this season. The Spearfish, S.D., product dominated the discus event during the outdoor season, winning the discipline five times and placing within the Top 3 nine times in 11 starts.
His outdoor season culminated by winning the Patriot League crown in the discus, placing fourth at the IC4A Championships and taking 11th at the prestigious NCAA East Regionals. Wells' career-best effort of 173 feet, 10 inches ranks fourth on the Black Knights' all-time list.
Wells was instrumental in Army defeating Navy during the outdoor season, placing runner-up in the shot put before winning the discus. His triumph in the latter clinched the dramatic victory for the Black Knights.
During the indoor season, Wells excelled in the shot put, where he won the Patriot League title. He uncorked his personal-best mark of 54-7 1/4 at the Valentine Invitational, moving into sixth place on the Academy's all-time Top 10 ledger.
