DALLAS (SMU) - The competitors participating in the 25th annual Dallas Morning News Swimming and Diving Classic started day one off shattering several meet and pool records. After day one, Northwestern leads with 180 points followed by Cal with 171 points. SMU holds third place with 152 and Florida St. is in fourth with 131 points.

The Classic began with solid competition in the 400 medley relay as Northwestern stopped the clock at 3:10.87 for first-place setting a new meet and pool record. The Wildcats notched their second consecutive DMN Classic 400 medley relay title as they clocked in at 3:14.85 last year. The Mustang relay team of Pontus Renholm, Alex Hetland, Luka Vrtovec and Thomas Fadnes started the night off by timing a SMU season-best time of 3:14.50 for third-place.

The record setting trends continued for the Mustangs as Ian Clark clocked in a season-best time of 3:50.89 for second -place in the 400 IM bettering his previous season best by seven seconds. Justin Smith placed eighth setting a new season-best time of 4:01.80.

In the memorial 200 free, Matt Grevers from Northwestern timed in at 1:34.21 shattering the previous pool and meet record, not only taking first-place but also was awarded the Jerry Heidenreich Memorial 200 Freestyle event honors. For the Mustangs, Maverick Smalley swam a career-best time clocking in at 1:40.00 for third-place and Shane Milu swam season-best time of 1:39.72 for ninth-place.

Vrtovec touched in at 20.13 for second-place in the 50 free and Fadnes finished eighth with a time of 21.27. Jernej Godec of Cal won the event with a time of 19.95.

In the one-meter diving event, Sam Helvie of Cal took first-place with a score of 358.25 while SMU's Preston Holcombe finished third with a score of 285.65.

Records continued to fall as Kyle Bubolz of Cal set a new meet and pool record with a time of 46.76 in the 100 fly. Bubolz was a repeat champion as he also won the 100 fly at last years DMN Classic when he timed in at 47.80. For the Mustangs, Vrtovec clocked in at 48.66 for third-place and Smith clocked a season-best time of 49.68 in the 100 fly for eighth-place.

Shattering the meet and pool record in the 100 back, Northwestern's Grevers clocked in at 46.86, marking his second consecutive DMN Classic 100 back title. SMU's Clark posted a season-best time of 49.26 for third-place and Renholm just out touched the other swimmers in his heat for a career-best time of 50.15 and seventh-place.

Last year's winner in the 100 breast, Mike Alexandrov of Northwestern claimed his title again as he crushed the meet and pool record with a first-place time of 53.01. Also finishing well under the previous meet and pool record was SMU's Hetland who was just out touched as he posted a personal season-best time of 53.25. Smalley finished tenth in the 100 breast with a time of 59.09.

Taking first-place, Cal (Adrian, Vayo, O'Neil, Meichtry) set a new meet and pool record with a time of 6:31.37. While the Mustang relay of Milu, Smith, Clark and Smalley ended the night with a third-place finish as they clocked in at 6:42.97 in the 800 free relay.

The teams will conclude the 25th annual DMN Swimming and Diving Classic tomorrow night starting at 7:30 p.m.
