CRESTED BUTTE, Colo. - Utah skiers won three of the four events held on the second day of the Western State Invitational, leading the team to a second-place finish.
Eva Huckova and Tague Thorson won the women's and men's slalom events, respectively. Snorri Einarsson continued to pace the Nordic team with his third win of the season in the 15-km Freestyle.
The Utes tallied 502 points, while Colorado won the meet with 505.5 points.
"This was a great weekend for Utah," Director of Skiing Eli Brown said. "Everyone is healthy and fired up for the last half of the season. We took a big step towards qualifying a full team for NCAA's, which takes some of the pressure off so we can focus on our individual goals."
Thorson's win was his first of the season. Thomas Zumbrunn tied his best finish of the year with a second-place run, while Scott Veenis also had a top-10 finish.
Huckova's win was her second of the year. The women's team struggled with visibility during the race.
Einarsson was followed in the freestyle by second-place Even Sletten. The duo has finished 1-2 three times this season, with Einarsson winning two of the three races. Casey Simons was the third Ute finisher with a 14th place finish.
Sara Schweigher led the Nordic women in the 10-km Freestyle, crossing the line eighth. Zoe Roy was 12th while Annelies Cook finished 15th.
"We have proven that we are in the mix for winning NCAA's, but we will continue to work to make improvements," Brown said. "We are rallying together for the big goal and are looking forward to March."
The men's giant slalom, which was halted during the first run on Friday, will be made up on Thursday, Feb. 7, before the New Mexico Invitational begins on Friday, Feb. 8, in Taos, N.M. The New Mexico Invitational marks the final regular season competition before NCAA Regionals.
