MIT looks to carry the momentum into next weekend's competition

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - The MIT skiing team showcased its talents this past weekend at the Plymouth State University Carnival held this past weekend. Behind a pair of top-10 finishes by Tim Pier, the men's team placed sixth in the slalom and fifth in the giant slalom. On the women's side, the Engineers captured seventh place in the slalom for its highest ranking in recent seasons and then finished ninth in the giant slalom.
Pier claimed third in Saturday's slalom with a time of 1:36.71, just four seconds behind the winner. Michael Yurkerwich ranked 19th (1:45.38) as Jacob Stultz came in 29th with a total of 1:49.05. Adam Bockelie (38th, 1:53.42), Jake Muhleman (47th, 2:01.77), and Ian Wolfe (49th, 2:05.67) finished closely together while Darren Verploegen (57th, 2:14.31), Christopher Stephenson (61st, 2:21.11), and Frank Yaul (64th, 2:29.49) formed another pack for MIT.
Rachel Leuthold registered her first top-30 finish as she claimed 28th in a combined time of 1:46.46. Jessica Stanley notched a career-best ranking of 37th place with a total of 1:52.49 while Alexis Dale came in 44th with a mark of 1:58.02. Jillian Reddy (55th, 2:10.43) and Alyssa Samson (64th, 2:18.76) rounded out the squad.
Pier's success continued in the giant slalom as he captured seventh place with a total of 2:17.32, once again just four seconds off the winning time. The remainder of the Engineers finished in several tight groupings. Stultz led the way (26th, 2:21.99), followed by Bockelie (28th, 2:24.74), Yurkerwich (34th, 2:27.06), Verploegen (38th, 2:32.60), Wolfe (45th, 2:36.17), Muhleman (49th, 2:42.38), David Somach (59th, 2:57.04), Stephenson (63rd, 3:06.61), and Yaul (65th, 3:13.46).
The women's team followed suit with multiple close groupings of its own. Leuthold (45th, 2:34.18) topped MIT, followed by Stanley (48th, 2:39.15), Dale (56th, 2:45.50), Reddy (64th, 3:00.99), Samson (66th, 3:04.38), Destie Jo Provenzano (75th, 3:23.51), and Maria Frendberg (3:34.20).
