Aurelia Korthauer continued on the trail toward NCAA qualification
Jan. 26, 2008
CABLE, WI- Senior Marius Korthauer continued to stake his claim as one of the favorites at this year's NCAA Skiing Championship, taking the top spot in Saturday's 10K freestyle race at the Telemark SuperTour event in Cable, Wisc. The German native completed the course in just 27:01.03, giving him a comfortable 12.2 second margin of victory over second place Bryan Cook.
Including the Duluth sprint races earlier in the week, Korthauer has now won four consecutive events.
Alaska's Zach McGill skated to a 22nd place finish with Ray Sabo right behind in 26th place: his best finish in a freestyle event this season and, with a time of 29:10.0, over two minutes faster than his finish in last weekend's skate race at NTN Trails. John Parry took 31st place in the event.
The Nanooks were without senior Vahur Teppan, who completed his stay with the Estonian national team at the Alberta World Cup races by finishing 38th in today's classic sprint races, just missing out on a spot in the quarterfinal heats.
On the women's side, Alaska got an impressive team effort, putting three skiers in the top ten for the second straight week. Anna Coulter led the Nanook charge with a seventh place finish, with Aurelia Korthauer and Elisabeth Habermann right behind in eighth and tenth place overall respectively. In collegiate only standings, the trio took fourth, fifth, and sixth.
The solid finish keeps the three Nanooks in prime position for a qualifying spot for this year's NCAA races.
After the first day of skiing, Northern Michigan currently sits atop the combined team standings with 184 points, with Alaska in second with 164. The Nanook men sit in second just behind the Wildcats by a score of 89 to 80, while the women also trail NMU 96-84.
Alaska's skiers return to the trails in Cable tomorrow, winding up their stay at the Telemark with tomorrow's classic races.
