Ski Teams Place Third At Colby-Sawyer College Carnival
The UMass ski teams head to the UConn Carnival next weekend.

SUNAPEE, N.H. - The UMass men and women's ski team opened their season at the Colby Sawyer College Carnival both placing third at the two day Giant Slalom carnival. With consistent skiing from freshman Jamie Taloumis, the Minutewomen finished second (149.59) on Saturday and third on Sunday (431.54). The Minutemen took fourth on Saturday (182.62) behind sophomore Andrew Hawes, and placed third on Sunday (490.09).
On Saturday, senior Eliza Hawkins started where she left off last season taking first place in the first Giant Slalom race of the seaon. Freshman Jamie Taloumis took sixth place (52.78) in her first collegiate race. Emily Shilletto also had a solid start to the season, placing eighth to place in the top ten for the Minutewomen. Heidi Skinnner placed 26th (54.43) and Ashley Hawes placed 39th (55.58) to round out the top five finishers.
Taloumis continued her successful weekend Sunday, placing fifth (1:43.73). Taloumis also recorded the third best start for the event. Skinner finish 19th (1:47.30), Hawes finished 23rd (1:49.27), freshman Abby Nolan finished 27th (1:51.24) and Lauren Levey finished 52nd (2:20.24).
For the Minutemen, Andrew Hawes tied for ninth (48.31) with Colby Sawyer's Andrew Smith. Fellow skier Matthew Small placed 17th, while Ian Hohmeister finished 21st (50.40), Alex Zahoruiko finished 26th and Paul Lewenberg finished 37th (55.17).

Sunday faired better for the Minutemen as Senior Jason Small took first (1:34.34) in the Giant Slalom. Hawes again skied well placing fourth (1:36.18). Hohmeister, James Green, and Adam Pogorzelski skied to a 17th, 19th, and 20th finish respectively. Their times of 1:39.44, 1:40.03 and 1:40.10 helped the Minutemen jump to a third place finish with a team total of 490.09. The Minutemen are now in fourth place overall in the Eastern Collegiate Ski Conference (ECSC).
The Minutemen and Minutewomen return to the slopes on Friday, January 18th at the UConn Carnival held in North Conway, N.H.
