Nevada Beats Air Force, New Mexico Military Institute In Rifle

RENO, Nev. - The University of Nevada remained perfect with wins over Air Force and New Mexico Military Institute here over the weekend in collegiate rifle. The top-ranked Nevada air rifle team helped the Pack remain undefeated (15-0).

Nevada's Blue squad beat Air Force with scores of 2304 and 2297 to 2273 and 2266 for Air Force while taking care of New Mexico Military Institute 2304 to 1819 and 2297 to 1824.

In air rifle, Nevada Blue won 1550 to 1524 and 1556 to 1516 over Air Force. New Mexico Military Institute didn't compete in air.

The Nevada Silver squad didn't compete in small bore but did post a score of 1443 in one round of air rifle during the two-day tournament.

Nevada's Matthew Briggs and Corrie Svee had personal bests the first day and Dawn Tarbet and Holly Caraway had personal bests the second day.

Nevada's defending NCAA air rifle champion Ryan Tanoue was named the tournament MVP.

The Wolf Pack, ranked No. 1 in the fall for air rifle, will host the NCAA West Coast Sectional Saturday-Sunday, Feb. 8-9, for the right to compete at the NCAA Championships, March 13-15, at West Point, N.Y. The Pack also has the Hawaiian Invitational, Feb. 23-24, after the West Coast Sectional and prior to nationals, to complete the 2002-03 season.
