American Crews Continue To Dominate At Henley Royal Regatta

Brown advances to Remenham Cup semifinals with win over London's Thames Rowing Club

HENLEY-ON-THAMES, England (AP) - Brown advanced to the Remenham Cup semifinals by beating London's Thames Rowing Club by five lengths Friday at the Henley Royal Regatta.

The crew from Providence, R.I., will next take on Germany's Dortmund club in the international women's eights race.

In the same event, Radcliffe Crew from Harvard lost out to a British composite crew from Oxford Brookes University and Nottingham Boat Club by two lengths.

In the Ladies Plate for elite eights, Brown beat Syracuse by five lengths in an all-American quarterfinal. It will next race Harvard, who beat a composite crew from London Rowing Club and Melbourne University, by 2 3/4 lengths.

In the Princess Elizabeth Cup for schoolboy eights, Belmont Hill School from Massachusetts lost to England's Radley College by 1/4 length.

In the Thames Cup quarterfinal for club eights, Potomac Boat Club from Washington, D.C., lost by one length to London club Tideway Scullers. Potomac took the early lead, but was overhauled halfway down the course when it struggled with the tough, blustery conditions.

In the Temple Cup quarterfinal for student eights, Cornell edged England's University of Bristol by 1/4 length.

In the Fawley Cup quarterfinals for schoolboy quadruple scullers, Maritime from Norwalk, Conn., beat Malvern Preparatory School from Pennsylvania by 1/2 length in a race where the lead changed several times in headwind conditions. A Malvern preparatory School composite crew of Miami Rowing Club beat England's Windsor Boys' School by 3 1/4 lengths in the other quarterfinal.

In the Diamond Sculls for international single scullers, Jamie Schroeder from Cornell beat Australia's Kris Coventry from Mercantile Rowing Club. Schroeder now faces Britain's top sculler, Alan Campbell, in the semifinals.

In the Princess Royal Cup quarterfinals for international women single scullers, Michelle Guerette from Radcliffe Crew, Harvard, defeated Bibi Klaassen from the Netherlands. Hilary Gehman from Cornell lost to Australia's Elsa O'Hanlon.
