HENLEY-ON-THAMES, England (AP) -Harvard beat Southern California in the Ladies' Plate for international eights at the Henley Royal Regatta on Thursday, cruising to a three-lengths win and a spot in the quarterfinals against Stanford.
In the Diamond Sculls, first contested in 1844, Thomas Graves of Bantam Boat Club in Hartford, Conn., moved into the quarterfinals with a four-length win over Stuart Davies of Australia's Mercantile Club. Later, Gavin Frase from the University of California lost by 1 1/4 lengths to Gerard van der Linden of the Netherlands. Jordan Sagalowsky of the Charles River Association in Boston also lost, going down by an easily verdict to Charlie Palmer of Cambridge University.
In the new Prince Albert Cup for student coxed fours, Kent School from Kent, Conn., lost by three-quarters of a length to Durham University from the north of England. In the Visitors' Cup for club coxless fours, Porcellian of Cambridge, Mass., lost to London A by 4 1/2 lengths.
In the Fawley Cup for international schoolboy quadruple sculls, Cincinnati Country Day School beat the Scotch College from Melbourne, Australia, by two lengths.
In the Temple Cup for student eights, a quick start by Cornell helped it post a three-length win over England's Imperial College. Cornell now faces Trinity College from Dublin, Ireland, in the quarterfinals. The University of California cruised to a 3 3/4-length victory over England's Oxford Brookes University.
In the Princess Elizabeth Cup for international schoolboy eights, Phillips Academy of Andover, Mass., knocked out St. Edward's School, one of the local favorites, winning by 2 3/4 lengths.
Later, Belmont (Mass.) High School beat another English crew, from Latymer Upper School, by 1 1/4 lengths. Belmont will face St. Ignatius College Preparatory School from San Francisco in the quarterfinals.

Earlier, Thomas Jefferson High School from Alexandria, Va., made the quarterfinals by winning easily over Emanuel School from London and St. Ignatius easily beat the Canford School from England.
Nicholas Henderson and Brethney Morgan of Harvard won easily over Peter Lock and Rupert Davies of England's Lymington club in the Silver Goblets for international coxless pairs.
