Washington, D.C. - The Georgetown University women's openweight crew defeated George Washington on Sunday morning, taking the Class of 1998 Cup in the process. The Hoyas were victorious on overall points and captured the trophy for the second time ever, with both occurrences within the last three years.
The Varsity Eight and Novice Four earned victories to help secure the cup victory by a solitary point. Georgetown's V8 nudged out the GW boat by tenths of a second during their race and the N4 easily won their heat, winning by 13.3 seconds. The Blue and Gray took the overall event on points despite finishing second in the Varsity Four and Freshman/Novice Eight. The point totals were agreed upon by the respective coaches before the event.
"The racing today was intense and I thought our ladies did a great job today," said Head Coach Glenn Putyrae. "Luckily, we were able to get the racing in before the rains came and win the Cup back with a good showing."
