Gonzaga won 3-of-4 races Saturday.

WASHINGTON, DC - Gonzaga University's men's Varsity 8+ and Novice 8+ rowing teams ended a successful weekend on the East Coast, winning 3-of-4 races Saturday at the George Washington Invitational Regatta on the Potomac River.
The Gonzaga Varsity 8+ finished second in its morning race, the University of Virginia winning in 5:38.7 while Gonzaga was second in 5:41.2 and the University of Michigan third in 5:42.1. The Bulldogs rowed through 20th-ranked Michigan in the last 500 meters. Virginia is ranked 18th in the first USRowing Collegiate poll of the season, while Gonzaga received three votes.
The Bulldogs Novice 8+ won its morning race in 5:51.9 while Virginia was second in 6:00.1 and Michigan third in 6:15.1.
The morning races were helped by a tail wind.
In the afternoon, the Varsity 8+ captured its race in 5:52.7 with Virginia second in 5:53.7 and Rutgers University third in 6:06.8. Virginia led through the first 1,000 meters and the Bulldogs and Cavaliers were even with 100 meters to go. The race was rowed into a slight head wind.
The Novice 8+ won its afternoon race in 5:52.9 in a slight tail win with Virginia second in 6:03.1 and Rutgers third in 6:04.4.
The Varsity 8+ lineup was coxswain Sean Finerty, stroke Warren North, Joe Dudley, Pat Swihart, Scott McCoy, Brendan McCarthy, Greg Malman, Patrick Moran and bow KC Anderson. The Novice 8+ lineup consisted of coxswain Crystal Huff, stroke Matt White, Julian Stephanski, Andrew Krug, Carson Bowlin, Connor Wege, Neil Coppinger, Nick Willard and bow Benjamin Schwarz.

"This was a fantastic weekend," Gonzaga head coach Dan Gehn said. "Everybody rowed well and they learned from their races. I think we learned a lot about where we are this weekend. We faced some strong competition."
The Bulldogs opened the weekend Friday with the Novice 8+ defeating the U.S. Naval Academy while the Varsity 8+ lost to the Midshipmen.
