Yale Wins Four of Five Races

March 24, 2007

PHILADELPHIA, PA - For the second year in a row, there was no stopping the Yale women's crew team at the Connell Cup. Yale won every race it entered at the regatta, held annually against Ivy rivals Penn and Columbia.

Strong tail winds on the Schuykill River had all crews flying down the two kilometer course Saturday morning, with the Yale varsity eight rowing the fastest time of the day - 5:48. The Yale varsity was stroked by captain Rachel Jeffers and also included Tess Gerrand (seven), Christine Geiser (six), Jamie Redman (five), Taylor Ritzel (four), Maren McCrea (three), Alice Henly (two), Christine Glandorf (bow) and Emily Cleveland (coxswain). But the river was so fast that Columbia and Penn's varsity eights also finished in under six minutes.

The junior varsity eight also won comfortably in their race, with Penn finishing eight seconds back and Columbia twenty seconds behind. The boat included Jennie Hansen (stroke), Amanda Rich (seven), Suzanne Salgado (six), Christina Person (five), Caroline Berson (four), Cara Dermody (three), Lee Glandorf (two), Karin Weisenthal (bow) and Erin Haber (coxswain).

There was a photo finish in the freshman eight race, but it didn't include the Bulldogs. Yale won the race by eight seconds while Penn finished one tenth of a second ahead of Columbia in the battle for second place. The freshman eight boat was stroked by Katherine Adams and included Kate Mullan (seven), Allix Wilde (six), Hayley Johnson (five), Zoe Ballance (four), Catherine Hart (three), Mary Pat Wixted (two), Laura Gottesdiener (bow) and Mia Cleveland (coxswain).

In the two other races the Bulldogs entered, the varsity four and the varsity four "B", they had mixed success. Yale won the varsity four by twelve seconds, but in the varsity four "B", the Yale boat finished second to Penn by four seconds.

Next weekend, the Bulldogs will head to Ithaca, NY to face Cornell and Syracuse in the Cayuga Cup. Yale won the event last year, and will look to go two for two to start their spring season.
