1997 College Lacrosse
Syracuse vs. Virginia
all broadcast dates for this game
Having reached the NCAA title game twice in the previous three years, Virginia entered the 1997 lacrosse season with the loftiest of goals. And why not? Goalie Chris Sanderson, who had started every single game the year before, was back in the fold, as were Doug Knight and Michael Watson both of whom were coming off back-to-back first-team All-America seasons, and who had combined for 105 goals in 1996.The Cavaliers' first game of the new season would be perhaps their toughest test a Syracuse squad riding a streak of 14 consecutive Final Four appearances. The Orangemen featured the first two Powell brothers, Ryan and Casey, both of whom would eventually finish their careers among the legendary program's all-time scoring leaders. Virginia entered this season-opener ranked second in the country; Syracuse was ranked third. The road to an eventual Final Four berth for only one of these teams would begin with this matchup a thrilling, wide-open game that would ultimately become a must-have collector's item for goal-scoring aficionados.
