Wisconsin is known for its strong football and basketball programs, but their hockey program has been more successful then either the gridiron or the hardwood versions of the Badgers. Wisconsin has won four NCAA hockey championships and produced players like Chris Chelios, Curtis Joseph and Mike Richter. Lesser known by those who aren't college hockey enthusiasts is the University of Denver. The Pioneers own five NCAA titles, including two separate back-to-back championships. The 1997-98 season found these two storied programs headed in opposite directions. Wisconsin was riding high after two straight losing seasons, while Denver was struggling after three straight winning seasons. Two programs, one on the way up and one on the way down, met in an epic battle with an unforgettable ending.
